1. Size: what is actually going
Not square footage: items. A sparse three-bedroom can be less work than a packed one-bedroom with a decade of closets. This is why serious movers ask about inventory, not just room count. Every box you do not move is money kept.
2. Access: the invisible multiplier
Third-floor walk-up, long carry from the closest legal parking spot, an elevator you could not reserve: access can add hours to a local move. Tell your mover about stairs, elevators, and parking honestly, because they will discover it anyway, on your time.
3. Distance: hourly or flat
Local moves run hourly. Long-distance moves should be one flat rate based on your inventory, agreed before moving day. If a company wants to bill a 6-hour drive to LA by the hour, traffic on I-5 becomes your bill. Do not sign up for that.
4. Season: the calendar tax
The last five days of any month, summer weekends, and the first of the month are peak everywhere in the state. A mid-month Tuesday is the same move with less competition for the crew.
