Most moving checklists are written by people who have never moved anyone. Here is the version our crews would hand a friend: fourteen days, no fluff.
Days 14 to 10
- Book the movers and lock the date: end-of-month and weekend slots go first everywhere in California.
- If your SF street is narrow or busy, ask about a temporary no-parking permit now, not later.
- Start a "do not pack" box list: documents, medications, chargers, valuables that ride with you.
Days 9 to 5
- Declutter by category, not by room: sell or donate before you pay to move things you do not want.
- Submit your USPS change of address, then utilities: power and internet at the new place first.
- Use up the freezer. Nobody has ever successfully moved a frozen lasagna 400 miles.
- Reserve building elevators and confirm any certificate of insurance your buildings require.
Days 4 to 1
- Pack a first-night bag per person plus one kitchen box: kettle, two mugs, paper towels, scissors.
- Photograph electronics cabling before unplugging, and the empty apartment after loading (deposits love evidence).
- Defrost the fridge 24 hours out; leave doors propped open overnight.
- Confirm arrival time with your moving company and keep your phone loud on moving morning.
Moving day
Your only jobs: point, answer questions, and keep coffee within reach. A good crew handles the rest, and the fixed price means the clock is our problem, not yours.
