The cheapest item on any move is the one that does not go. Downsizing two weeks out is the highest-ROI hour-per-hour work of your whole move.
The method: by category, not by room
Rooms hide duplicates; categories expose them. All books in one pile makes the decision honest. Run the categories in this order: clothes, books, kitchen duplicates, furniture that will not fit the new floor plan, garage. The garage goes last because it is where resolve goes to die: schedule it fresh, on a Saturday morning.
The one-question filter
Not "might I need this" (the answer is always yes) but "would I pay to move this across California?" For long-distance moves, that question has a literal price attached, because flat rates are built from inventory. Fewer items, smaller number.
Where it goes
- Sell: local marketplaces move furniture fastest with real photos and honest prices.
- Donate: charity shops and donation centers around the Bay take furniture in good condition; many pick up.
- Junk: for true junk, haulers charge by volume, so the sell-and-donate rounds literally shrink that bill too.
Then move only what earned its place. The truck gets lighter and so does the unpacking.
