Twice a week someone is surprised that we cannot take the barbecue's propane tank. Here is the whole list, so nothing surprises you on moving day.
The hazmat no-list
Legal movers cannot transport flammables and pressurized containers: propane tanks, gasoline (including inside lawn equipment: run it dry), paint and thinners, aerosol cans, fireworks, ammunition, pool chemicals, and most cleaning solvents. Plan a hardware-store drop-off or give them to a neighbor.
The should-not list
- Documents and valuables: passports, deeds, jewelry, hard drives, cash. Not because the truck is unsafe, but because you want them reachable, always. They ride with you.
- Medications: a week's supply in your bag, whatever happens to box 47.
- Plants: within California they can ride along on short moves, but a closed truck on a hot day is rough on them. Cars have air conditioning; trucks' cargo boxes do not.
- Perishables: the freezer contents do not survive a long-distance run. Cook a great last-week menu instead.
Everything else: furniture, boxes, pianos, gym racks, the 400-pound marble table: bring it on. Literally, tell us and we bring the right crew.
